SOUTH BOSTON, VA - Center for Pediatric Therapies (CPT) is celebrating 25 years of helping children reach their fullest potential through compassionate, individualized care, including its continued service to children and families in South Boston and Halifax County. The organization will commemorate this milestone with a “Superhero Day” anniversary celebration this Saturday, September 12, honoring the children, families, employees, community partners, and referral sources who have been part of CPT's remarkable journey.

CPT opened its first practice in Danville in September 2001 as the region's first pediatric practice devoted exclusively to providing occupational, physical, and speech therapy services for children. Co-founders Kristen Barker, OTR/L, and Tommy Mathena recognized a significant need for specialized pediatric therapy services in the Danville region, where many children and families were traveling more than an hour to obtain pediatric therapy care that was not otherwise available close to home.
“Twenty-five years ago, our vision was to create a place where children could receive specialized care close to home and where families would feel supported, understood, and hopeful,” said Barker, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Center for Pediatric Therapies. “This anniversary celebrates every child who has inspired us, every family who has entrusted us with their care, and every team member and community partner whose dedication has helped advance our mission.”
Today, Center for Pediatric Therapies is a full-service pediatric rehabilitation provider serving children from birth through age 21 throughout Southside and Central Virginia. CPT provides occupational, physical, and speech therapy, as well as applied behavior analysis services, through a multidisciplinary approach designed to address a wide range of neurological, orthopedic, developmental, behavioral, and communication needs.
CPT's South Boston location extends access to specialized pediatric therapy services for children and families throughout Halifax County and the surrounding region. By providing services closer to home, CPT helps reduce travel demands for families and supports children within the communities where they live, learn, and grow. During the past 25 years, CPT has expanded its reach across Danville, Lynchburg, Roanoke, Martinsville, and South Boston, Virginia, while remaining grounded in its original commitment to provide superior pediatric therapy services close to home.
Building Blocks Center for Children with Autism, established in 2004 as a division of Center for Pediatric Therapies, is an accredited private school serving children ages 2 through 14 with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Originally opened in Danville, Building Blocks now operates campuses in Danville and Lynchburg, where expert staff serve children and families throughout Southern and Central Virginia. The schools are both licensed by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) and accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Special Education Facilities (VAISEF).
CPT's continuum of support also includes Center for Pediatric Counseling (CPC), located in Danville, Virginia. CPC provides mental health services for children, adolescents, and families in a nurturing environment, using individualized treatment plans designed to support emotional well-being, relationships, and behavior. Recognizing the importance of family dynamics, CPC also provides counseling and support for families, including those raising children with special needs.
The “Superhero Day” celebration reflects a theme that has defined CPT since its founding: recognizing the courage, strength, and unique abilities of every child. The event will celebrate the organization's 25-year history while looking ahead to its continued growth and service to children and families throughout the region.
