    About Us

Staunton River State Park is one of the Commonwealth's original six state parks, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1936. The park is situated between the confluence of the Staunton River and Dan River in Scottsburg, Virginia. The park is regarded as one of the darkest locations along the east coast, having very little light pollution to impede the night sky. The park was designated as the 25th International Dark Sky Park by DarkSky International in July of 2015. The park hosts guided observing sessions monthly throughout the summer and sessions for special astronomical events throughout the year. The Chapel Hill Astronomical Observational Society is a close partner with the park and together they host the biannual Star Party, inviting astronomers and hobbyists from around the country for a week of observation and community.
