Mid-Atlantic Broadband Communities Corporation (MBC) is seeking an experienced and motivated Fiber Splicer to join our growing team! This position is primarily responsible for performing fiber optic splicing and testing for both ribbon and loose tube fiber across MBC’s network footprint. The ideal candidate will have a background in fiber optic technology, troubleshooting, and optical time domain reflectometer (ODTR) testing, along with a strong commitment to safety and quality.
MBC owns and operates an extensive open-access fiber optic network, providing wholesale optical transport services to communities throughout the southern Virginia region. Created in 2004, MBC's mission is one of economic revitalization and development in rural Virginia, working closely with communities and regional economic development groups to bring state-of-the-art broadband transport services to the area and help drive private sector investments in our region.
WORK LOCATION
Assigned locations throughout our network footprint with regular visits to MBC’s headquarters, located at 715 Wilborn Avenue, South Boston, VA 24592, as needed.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Fiber optic splicing for ribbon and loose tube cables in aerial and underground environments.
- Conduct OTDR, power meter, and light source testing to ensure optical signal performance.
- Troubleshoot and repair damaged fiber optic cables and network issues.
- Interpret splicing diagrams, network schematics, and construction prints.
- Maintain accurate documentation of splicing activities, test results, and network configurations.
- Collaborate with construction crews, project managers, and network engineers to ensure timely and quality installations.
- Respond to and mitigate fiber optics and other related telecommunications emergency repair and restorations as needed.
- Assist with customer locations equipment installs and turnups as needed.
- Adhere to all safety standards and company policies while working in various field conditions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in fiber optic splicing, including ribbon and loose tube.
- Proficient in OTDR testing, troubleshooting, and fiber characterization.
- Familiarity with industry-standard tools and equipment (e.g., fusion splicers, OTDRs, fiber identifiers).
- Familiarity with department of transportation (DOT) enforcement and compliance regulations.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and splice documentation.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel throughout network footprint.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in outdoor environments in various weather conditions.
- Knowledge and understanding of safety regulations and best practices.
- Willingness to continuously learn and adapt to new technologies and equipment.
- Strong time management skills, excellent communication skills and computer skills including Microsoft Office suite.
- Able to operate outside plant engineering tools and equipment such as measuring wheel, height stick, OTDR, company vehicle, etc.
- Ability to bend, stoop, sit, lift (approximately 75 lbs.), walk and stand for long periods.
