2026 Banister River Flotsam Flotilla

Join us for the 2026 Banister River Flotsam Flotilla, a day of community service, environmental stewardship, and historic preservation on Banister Lake and the Banister River. Whether you choose to paddle or help from shore, you'll be making a lasting impact on one of Virginia's remarkable waterways.
This year's cleanup is especially meaningful. Our focused section of the Banister River is now recognized as part of the Banister River Navigation Improvements Historic District, listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register. Nearly 200 years ago, this stretch of river served as a vital transportation corridor where flat-bottomed batteaux carried tobacco, flour, and other goods through a series of carefully engineered stone wing dams and sluices—many of which can still be seen today when water levels are low. These are among the best-preserved batteau navigation structures in Virginia, offering a rare glimpse into the region's transportation and industrial history.
At the same time, the Banister is a waterway that flows into the Dan River, which was named one of America's Most Endangered Rivers® in 2026, highlighting the need to protect the watershed from growing environmental threats. Every piece of litter removed from the Banister helps improve water quality and wildlife habitat downstream and showcases our communities' commitment to caring for these treasured waterways.
Past Flotillas have uncovered everything from waterlogged office chairs and Styrofoam blocks to tangled fishing line and dozens of tires—proof that every volunteer makes a tangible difference. While you're helping restore the river, keep an eye out for some of the Banister's wild residents, including bald eagles, great blue herons, belted kingfishers, wood ducks, and other native wildlife that depend on clean, healthy waterways.
