    Salary and Benefits Package:

    Starting basic salary for a Sworn, Senior Patrol Officers with the South Boston Police Department is within the range of $51,222 - $62,581.  In addition to the salary, all newly hired Sworn Patrol Officers receive a pre-tax hiring bonus of $2,500
     

    The following benefits are offered to all upon accepting a position with the South Boston Police Department.:

    • Retirement program through the Virginia Retirement System (VRS)
    • Mentoring and peer support for new hires.

    • All uniforms and equipment provided at no charge
    • 10 accrued sick hours per month, 8-hour per month for annual leave (extends to 12 hours after 5 years)

    • On call pay
    • Overtime pay cycle between pay periods
    • Short term and Long term disability
    • Incentive pay for:
      • $300 per year for an Associate’s Degree
      • $600 per year for a Bachelor’s Degree
      • $900 for a Master’s Degree

    Here is an example of a Senior Police Officer Salary (VA DCJS state certified):

    Base pay: $53,000 (depending on experience)

    Bachelor’s Degree: $600

    Total Salary: $53,600

    Most non-probationary police officers have the option of taking a department vehicle home. 


    Qualifications:

    Virginia Law Enforcement Officer Certification, United States citizen, ability to be courteous and professional with the public even in high stress situations, ability to carry out complex oral and written instructions, excellent moral character, no felony convictions or convictions for misdemeanors involving moral turpitude, excellent health and physical condition.
