ABOUT THE EVENT

Join friends and family for the first of two days of programs honoring the history of Brookneal’s Black communities from 1794 to 1944. This event, in partnership with the Robert Russa Moton Museum, will take place at Red Hill on Saturday, April 6 from 10:00 am–4:00 pm.

Programs include site tours of the estate and Quarter Place, a genealogy seminar by Red Hill’s Historian & Genealogist of African American History, a descendant-led discussion panel, and a presentation on traditional Black Appalachian music. 

Lunch will be served free of charge. 

FREE SHUTTLE BUS

For convenience, a free shuttle bus will depart from the Moton Museum to Red Hill at 9:00 am. Please indicate if you or your group would like to ride this bus when reserving your tickets.

Join the Moton Museum for a continuation of From Resistance to Resilience honoring Farmville’s student civil rights activists from 1945–1970. Programs rotate among spinning and weaving, blacksmithing, pottery, Colonial medicine, basket making, tin punching, and rope making. Groups may register by providing the number and ages of children, as well as the number of adults in attendance.

Home Educator groups are welcome, but please have one person responsible for registering the group!

Staff Archaeologist Lucia Butler will share our findings from last summer’s excavation of the servant’s house site, along with some of the artifacts discovered by archaeologists and volunteers. Learn about our fieldwork, enjoy a virtual tour of the new archaeology lab, and find out what archaeological questions we’re investigating next.

Selected applicants will pitch before a panel of judges and community members at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center in South Boston, Va. After dark, we will have an expert pointing out constellations and their “tails and tales” in the night sky. Bring a blanket, find a spot in the scenic field, and have fun with your family! The Campbell County Pop-Up Library will make an appearance as well!
